In what is being seen as a strategic move to bring Malta’s iGaming and esports industries into closer alignment, GamingMalta Foundation has announced a three‑year partnership with global esports organiser BLAST.

The agreement will see Malta host at least nine major international esports tournaments, starting with the BLAST Premier Bounty S2 in August. The deal also includes the development of a 1,000m² broadcast studio which will support live production and operational activity from Malta year-round.

While the headline might be about esports, the implications for Malta’s broader iGaming ecosystem are just as significant. GamingMalta, which brokered the deal, sees this agreement as an important organic step in positioning the island as a base for interactive entertainment across the board – one where esports, iGaming, content creation, and technology increasingly intersect.

“Our guiding ethos positions Malta as the home of gaming excellence. And this partnership reinforces our commitment to maintain our country’s status as a 360-degree hub where all things related to technology and gaming thrive. We are currently working towards consolidating a complete gaming ecosystem that takes into account both technology and player-driven trends,” said GamingMalta CEO Ivan Filletti.

The agreement, Mr Filletti stresses, is not simply limited to hosting events. Instead, it takes a holistic approach to facilitate the creation of long-term opportunities – whether for talent, for business, or for crossover collaborations between sectors that are already co‑existing in parallel.

“Esports is becoming an integral part of the broader gaming economy. By facilitating its potential for growth in Malta, we are also opening the door to fresh opportunities for companies based in Malta. The audiences, technologies and skill sets are increasingly overlapping between these two sectors. And now that we have a major player like BLAST operating from Malta, we’re giving local organisations – whether in iGaming, content production, or tech – the chance to connect with new markets, new demographics, and new types of engagement.”

With esports drawing a massive global following, the opportunity for iGaming operators is clear. The sector continues to attract a global audience concentrated in their 20s and 30s, players who are digitally adept, engaged, and boasting significant consumer power. This places the sector squarely within the ideal target range for iGaming brands; adults who not only have disposable income but are accustomed to interactive online platforms.

For Malta-based operators, the agreement presents a unique opportunity to secure new sponsorships and branded experiences that resonate with an audience already primed for immersive digital entertainment.

BLAST itself commands a global viewership that’s expected to approach 641 million by 2025, making it an ideal platform for Malta-based iGaming brands to explore new ways to connect with digitally-native audiences. GamingMalta branding will feature prominently across all BLAST Premier and Slam tournament broadcasts, offering sustained international exposure to millions of viewers throughout the partnership.

“However, it’s important to keep sight of the fact that the collaboration extends beyond visibility. BLAST has also committed to investing in Malta’s local talent pipeline through grassroots programmes, university partnerships, and support for content creators. These initiatives also have wider relevance for iGaming companies operating in Malta,” Mr Filletti continues, explaining that the skillsets developed through esports production, digital storytelling, event logistics, and audience engagement are directly transferable to the iGaming space. Competition for creative and tech talent is high.

“This growing ecosystem offers new access points to a generation of professionals already immersed in interactive, data-driven environments. This spells excellent news for operators looking to recruit, collaborate, or sponsor within the digital entertainment space.”

The partnership will see some of the world’s best esports teams and players head to Malta on several occasions, where they will compete in front of a global audience tuning in from all over the world.

“This collaboration will resonate with all areas of the industry, including engaging with grassroots organisations and universities, we’re looking forward to contributing to Malta’s continued success and unlocking new opportunities across the wider esports ecosystem,” Mr Filletti said.

Alexander Lewin, SVP of Commercial Revenue at BLAST, is likewise excited about the new partnership, stating that the company sees tremendous potential in Malta, not only as a home for world-class events but as a long-term base for innovation, content creation and industry collaboration.

“Malta has established itself as one of the world’s leading destinations for iGaming, gaming, and esports, and we’re excited to now help build out its next chapter as a global hub for future activity. BLAST’s partnership with GamingMalta represents a major milestone in our international expansion – bringing our renowned esports events and production capabilities to a region that’s already thriving with talent, infrastructure, and ambition.”

With a dedicated studio, office presence, and year-round programming, the esports company is fully committed to embedding itself into Malta’s gaming landscape and building something of lasting value for the local and global esports community.”

The partnership was also lauded by Economy Minister Silvio Schembri for feeding into Malta’s broader Vision 2050 goals. The latter outline the country’s ambition to become a global leader in future-facing industries by fostering innovation, investing in talent, and encouraging international collaboration. Both sectors are viewed as central to this strategy: scalable, exportable, and rich in career potential for a digitally-literate generation. And with esports continuing to gain momentum globally, its overlap with iGaming in terms of audience, technology, and commercial models makes it a natural complement within Malta’s wider economic vision.

Rather than treating esports and iGaming as separate lanes, this partnership recognises where they already intersect and builds from there. For Malta, it’s a practical move: attracting global attention while opening up new possibilities for the companies, creators, and professionals already working here. What happens next won’t be defined by labels, but by how these industries learn to speak to the same audience in new ways.
