Malta is set to become a key player on the global esports stage following the announcement of a major three-year partnership between competitive entertainment leader BLAST and GamingMalta, the independent non-profit foundation set up by the Government of Malta and the Malta Gaming Authority.
The partnership will host a range of Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) and Dota 2 events on the island.
The agreement, announced on Tuesday (today), will see Malta host nine major esports events, including the highly anticipated BLAST Premier Bounty Series 2 this August, and serve as the permanent home for a new 1,000sqm state-of-the-art esports studio and operations hub.
This facility will enable world-class content production and serve as a base for international broadcasts, positioning the island as a serious contender in the global competitive gaming landscape.
BLAST, renowned for delivering high-octane esports tournaments in iconic locations such as London, Rio and Singapore, is bringing its award-winning production to Malta as part of a long-term strategy to expand its global reach.
“Our partnership with GamingMalta makes a major milestone for BLAST having secured a multi-year partnership to elevate esports and gaming in Malta. We are excited to bring live output, a new studio and competitive entertainment to the island. We are excited by the government’s vision on all the gaming fronts and our partnership will continue to fuel this ambition,” said BLAST CEO Robbie Douek.
In addition to hosting top-tier Counter-Strike competitions, the partnership aims to deliver tangible benefits to Malta’s digital economy and local community. Through collaboration with universities, grassroots organisations, and local talent, BLAST and GamingMalta will support career pathways in esports, from content creation and broadcasting to event management and competitive play.
“This partnership aligns perfectly with the Government of Malta’s Vision 2050, which puts youth, innovation, and the creative economy at the centre of our strategy,” said Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri. “It’s about creating real, long-term opportunities for young people through careers, education, and international exposure.”
GamingMalta CEO Ivan Filletti echoed these sentiments: “We are committed to nurturing every level of the gaming ecosystem – from grassroots to global.”
The partnership will not only elevate Malta’s reputation in the global gaming space but is also expected to have a positive ripple effect on the local economy. With high-profile tournaments attracting international players, fans, and media attention, the collaboration is poised to boost tourism, hospitality, and ancillary industries.
The first major event under this partnership – the BLAST Premier Bounty S2 – kicks off in August, with 32 elite teams competing for a share of the $500,000 prize pool. Known for its unique “bounty” format, the tournament allows teams to select their opponents and raise the stakes through strategic wagers – a fresh twist on traditional esports formats.
