Malta, with its rich history, vibrant culture, and cutting-edge tech scene, has in recent years built a strong reputation as offering an idyllic blend of work and lifestyle that is hard to find elsewhere.
This has made it the perfect destination for remote workers from all over the world. Next generation industries like iGaming and fintech have very firmly embraced the shift towards remote work, with many international gambling companies employing remote workers to gain access to global talent that allows them to maintain their competitive edge. And many of these remote workers cast a strong eye towards Malta as the perfect base for remote work.
There are a lot of other factors that have contributed to Malta’s popularity with remote workers, not least the island’s famed Mediterranean lifestyle, with gorgeous beaches, historic landmarks, and a buzzing nightlife. But it takes more than that. The robust infrastructure and supportive business environment, alongside a favourable regulatory framework, skilled workforce, and strategic location, have all played a part in seeing the island become what it is today.
Malta’s proactive approach to fostering a remote-friendly environment cannot be overstated, with the government introducing several initiatives aimed at attracting digital nomads. This includes the Nomad Residence Permit, which allows non-EU nationals to live and work remotely from Malta.
Enter Residency Malta, in charge of making these people’s dreams happen. Daryl Grima, Marketing Manager at Residency Malta, explains that while Malta was already hosting digital nomads from the European Union, since the introduction of the Nomad Residence Permit, the island has seen an increase in remote workers and digital nomads choosing the island as their base.
“In three years, the Nomad Residence Permit has attracted circa 1700 applications. Malta also keeps topping the charts as a destination for digital nomads and remote workers. We’ve ranked 4th among the 12 best European cities for freelancers and self-employed workers by Doola. Moreover, VisaGuide.World ranked Malta as the eighth best country for Digital Nomads in 2024 globally. Other indexes also rate Malta highly on a regular basis,” he states.
The Nomad Residence Permit, allows third-country nationals to reside in Malta, initially for a year, but with the possibility to renew three times for a total of a four-year stay, as long as all criteria and requirements are still being met. This offers employees a chance to experience a unique lifestyle in Malta and a cultural immersion like no other. Immediate family members can accompany the main applicant, enhancing the appeal for families.
The process to acquire a Nomad Residence Permit is straightforward. Applicants need to submit an application with required documentation, including proof of remote work, proof of a minimum yearly gross income of €42,000 and a police conduct certificate, amongst others. There is a fee of €300 euro per applicant.
“The Agency will then conduct background checks and when the process is complete the applicants are notified by email. After receiving the Letter of Approval in Principle, applicants must secure accommodation and a health insurance covering risks in Malta. The applicants will then be invited to our offices for biometrics, after which the Nomad Residence Permit will be issued,” Mr Grima explains.
Navigating the documentation requirements is easy, thanks to a detailed checklist on the official Residency Malta website. This is intended to assist prospective applicants and those seeking renewals. Additionally, Residency Malta has compiled comprehensive FAQs to simplify the application process.
As long as the applicant meets all eligibility criteria and passes the background verification, the process is extremely smooth and easy. The Nomad Residence Permit has already had an impact, with many remote workers seeking to enjoy the exceptional lifestyle in Malta. Relocation is usually seamless, thanks to it being an English-speaking country that offers a robust telecommunications structure, with free public Wi-Fi hotspots to nationwide 5G coverage, all essential for remote work.
But there are other attractions on a more personal level. Malta consistently ranks among the safest countries globally, providing peace of mind and an excellent healthcare system for digital nomads and their families. Moreover, the island’s strategic location and efficient transportation options make it easy to access and explore neighbouring countries and cultures, enriching the experience for those seeking both work and adventure. Add year-round warm weather and the rich culture, history and heritage, and finally, a multicultural and a hospitable society. All these elements make it very easy for digital nomads to find like-minded people or to integrate with the locals.
“Malta already offered a strong eco-system for digital nomads, ticking the boxes of connectivity, affordability, language, and community. The increase of co-living and co-working spaces, and the growth of the nomad community have significantly incentivised remote workers. These facilities provide essential support, foster professional networking and enhance the overall experience for digital nomads and remote workers, making Malta an attractive destination for this niche community,” Mr Grima concludes.
