Next week, Malta will welcome students and schools from across the globe for the inaugural School Esports World Championship: a three-day competition that places education and gaming side by side.

Running from 9th to 11th October, the event is organised by DAIGON Esports in collaboration with PLAYCON, with support from GamingMalta.

Esports is increasingly being recognised as more than a competitive pastime. Around the world, schools are integrating gaming into their curricula to build digital literacy, teamwork, and strategic thinking.

The choice of titles for this first championship reflects that shift: Minecraft, long used as an educational tool for creativity and problem-solving, and Rocket League, which encourages communication, quick decision-making, and coordination.

International education organisations are backing the event, highlighting the growing crossover between learning and gaming. Partners include:

  • Council of British International Schools (COBIS)
  • Education Collaborative for International Schools (ECIS)
  • British Schools in the Middle East (BSME)
  • Independent Schools Association (ISA)

For Malta, hosting the championship underscores the island’s role in the wider conversation about how interactive entertainment is shaping skills for the future.

The event adds an educational dimension to Malta’s esports activities, positioning the island as a meeting point for schools, students, and industry stakeholders exploring the potential of gaming beyond play.
