Playing on phone

According to a newly released survey conducted by Yonder Consulting and presented by Nostrabet, merely one in five gamblers bet outside their homes, despite a prevalence of online gambling on mobile phones.

The survey, of 8,000 adult Brits, found that mobile phones largely dominate iGaming, especially amongst young people. As many as three-quarters of those in the 18-34 age cohort used their mobile phones to gamble, although amongst those aged 65 and older, only 14 per cent did so.

More generally, younger bettors were more inclined to use a wider range of different devices to gamble.

Regarding other preferred formats, four in ten respondents preferred gambling on their laptops, which was the second most preferred way to access betting sites, followed by PCs, tablets, and Smart TVs.

During 2020, according to Nostrabet's presentation of the survey, "more free time and the inability to go outside and lead an eventful lifestyle resulted in people's homes being the main locations where they gambled over the internet.

Data also indicates that eight per cent of participants would still gamble online while at a club or a pub, which would only be possible during periods of lighter restrictions.

Regarding iGaming website accounts, the survey found that an average gambler holds up to three active accounts, whereas younger bettors have more.

The stats also indicate that males have more accounts than females, although they also use them more frequently.

A fifth of the respondents in the 18-34-year-olds group hold five or more betting accounts online.

Commenting on the stats, Garcia Miller, editor and bookmaker analyst at Nostrabet commented: "Betting via mobile devices is gaining more and more popularity over recent years. Most betting sites provide Android and iOS apps that allow customers to access the available betting options and games.

"Those that haven't introduced any mobile apps yet have responsive mobile websites that work perfectly. Punters really appreciate the fact they can place bets wherever they are. It is no surprise that the mobile betting percentage is growing".
