Betsson said its expansion into Málaga won’t have any negative repercussions on its Malta operations or presence.
“The expansion will not negatively impact Betsson’s operations, headcount or presence in Malta,” a spokesperson for the iGaming firm told iGamingCapital.
“Málaga is being developed as an additional technology hub to broaden our access to international talent and strengthen capabilities in areas such as gaming development, native applications and artificial intelligence.”
“It is not intended to replace or relocate existing functions from Malta. Malta remains a key operational and technology centre for Betsson Group, where we have built a significant presence and highly skilled team over the past two decades.”
Betsson has leased a 3,000 square metre office in the Spanish city which it intends to develop into a technology hub.
When announcing it last year, Betsson Operations CEO Jesper Svensson drew a direct comparison between Málaga’s appeal and the qualities that have kept the group anchored in Malta for several years.
“Málaga shares many qualities with Malta, where we have built a world-class tech team over the past 20 years,” he said.
“It is an international, dynamic city with great energy and excellent connections to most of our other offices, making it a natural choice for this expansion.”
He added that Spain’s strong links to Latin America and favourable visa arrangements make it an attractive destination for skilled professionals looking to relocate.
While the new office is expected to open later this year, Betsson already employs people based in Málaga and plans to continue building its team there.
